Either Free or Not Yours
"There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he freely forgave them both....." Luke 7:41-42a. We live in a world which is like a large marketplace. Human heart is like an expert trader. There are a lot of transactions going on. We like acquiring things by paying a price. Everything we do or aspire has been influenced by the norms of this marketplace. 'Perform better, pay more and you will get better results.' This is the buzzword in the life we live. However, God's economy for human life is totally different. Pay and get mentality cannot help us in getting to know God. God is different. Let us consider the things in life you can never buy. In Isaiah 55:1-2, God invites us to 'come... buy... without price.' You cannot buy love. You either get it freely or you don't get it at all. You cannot buy character. You cannot buy intimacy in relationship. You cannot buy peace. In the beginning, when God made Adam and Eve and placed them in the garden called Eden and He promised that they may freely eat from every tree of the garden (Genesis 2:16), except one. God is a giving God. He is giver of all good gifts. Think of all the things that have been given to you freely. Our life is a gift from God. Our families, our abilities, the oxygen we breathe, the sunrise you saw today, all of it has been given to us freely. The parable quoted above was spoken by the Lord Jesus while He was dining in the house of a man named Simon. The place was packed with a lot of religious people. A woman with bad reputation sneaked into this banquet and stood near Jesus and poured her love upon Him. In response to mental responses of these religious people towards this woman, Jesus spoke. He said some profound things which apply to all of us. He who has been freely forgiven, much forgiven, he loves much. Forgiveness of sins cannot be bought. No works, no rituals, no goodness on our part can be offered to God. We all needed salvation, but we did not have the price to pay. Jesus came, as a man, and paid on the Cross on behalf of man. Salvation is a free gift of the grace of God. Many of the readers may already have salvation because they believe in Jesus. But can the process stop there? Can we now start paying God for our walk with Him as His children? The answer is a big NO. Matthew 10:8b says, "Freely it has been given unto you; Therefore freely give." Romans 8:32 says, "He that spared not His own Son,..... how shall He not with him freely give us all things?" If we seem to lack in our Christian lives, it is because we haven't learned to receive that freely. We get back into business of trying to buy and earn. Receiving much is the key to having much, and that is the source behind giving much. Remember - It is either free, or it cannot be yours. Come to God and freely receive. Everything He has for you, is freely given to you. Receive it by faith in the One who is so ready to give. Freely - without a price, without works, in abundance, without holding back.
