A Faithful Worker in the Soul Factory
“Ho, every one that thirsts, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfies not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live;" - Isaiah 55:1-3a Heaven has a weighing machine and we have a weighing machine. This passage is similar to John 4 conversation Jesus had with the woman at the well of Samaria. There the Lord invited us to come to the Living water to find the ultimate satisfaction in our souls. However, the invitation to the waters in this passage has some additional information. God promises fatness of soul to whoever comes to Him by faith. Inferred here is the idea of soundness, good health, fertility and productivity. Psalmist in 119:25 says "My soul cleaves unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word." Our real identity is not our looks or who others see us. We are not our body, but we are our soul. Yesterday a dear friend of mine passed away. His daughter, a godly young lady responded, "Dad hasn't ceased to exist. He is still dad. He is more alive than he ever was." Such words are a miracle. She is not speaking from the place of ignorance. Her father, like her was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. She has assurance that her father's soul has left his body and now lives in the glorious eternity. That is what soul is about. It lives in us. In fact, the human body is almost like a temporary coat for the soul to be able to manifest itself in this earthly existence. Jesus said, "What shall a man give in exchange to his soul?" John Bunyan in his classic Holy War compared it to a city with many gates and many enemies and termed it Mansoul. We often weigh our lives with our temporal resources, But God weighs our soul. In Psalms, we often see the man of God using the term 'my soul.' We see a man's soul vexed (6:3), torn (7:2), tread down (7:5), consumed (31:9), spoiled (35:12), destroyed (35:17), disquieted (42:5), cast down (42:6), full of troubles (88:3) and many such expressions. Our souls have been created with tremendous capacities for God. Yet, as we read, so often because of sin within and enemies without, it cleaves to the dust. Dust contaminates and corrupts. The machinery of our soul often gets dysfunctional. It stops being productive for God. In factories, workers will tell us that regular cleaning and greasing is very important for machinery's production capacity. A good engineer chooses to work hard on preventive maintenance much before a major breakdown ever happens. Apostle Paul gives a similar picture in 2 Corinthians 4:17, "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;" This is fascinating. Have you ever gone through troubles and sufferings? Have you ever prayed to the Lord for His quickening? 'Quicken' is the same Hebrew word as 'live' in Isaiah 55:3. Author of Psalm 119 was a Word of God oriented disciple, whose prayer vocabulary richly consisted of "Quicken me!" Here is how the Lord answers. In 2 Corinthians 4-6, Paul is describing the nature of trials he had to go through as a man of God. It was all so intense. Good chapters to read if you are being afflicted. He calls them momentary and light. But they are producing something. Much more than that. He is saying that they are working for us. Yes, you heard it right. THEY ARE WORKING FOR US. Engineers of our soul. To take the dust off. To grease and to maintain. To make our soul productive. To quicken. Your afflictions are the servants of God and the servants of your soul. Our outer man perishes, but inner man is being renewed. The earthly tent is being torn down to display a building that is from God. Never, no never, never quit in your trials. It is not worth it. It just leaves a tottering house. Let the engineer of our soul work. Endure the suffering. Look for the dust God is removing. Keep your eyes on the glory being revealed once the dust is taken off. Hear God, come to the waters, drink from the Holy Spirit, be revived, be quickened. Remember, He has made a promise, "Your soul shall live."
