The question posed by the devil to Eve in the garden of Eden has an echo that has lasted as long as human race has existed. This echo gets personal and meets every individual in his life. "Yea" in the beginning of the tempting statement is intriguing. Various translations render Genesis 3:1 in a variety of ways. The Amplified Bible puts it this way, “Can it really be that God has said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” There seems to be a subtle suggestion towards unreasonableness in God's mandate to our first parents, Adam and Eve. A more common translation is, “Did God really say .....?” The Living Bible presents it like this :
So the serpent came to the woman. “Really?” he asked. “None of the fruit in the garden? God says you mustn’t eat any of it?” Devil insinuates to the incredibility towards the Divine in the human heart. Can God talk straight? Shouldn't you be digging into some hidden mystical meaning? How can God be so straight and easily heard?
Wycliffe translates it in this manner, "Why commanded God to you, that ye should not .....?"It is easy to fill human life with 'why's' towards God without waiting to hear what He communicates so straight. Religious intent originating in human hearts tends to place many other aspects of God's nature above His omni-goodness.
There is another way the Hebrew phrase can be translated in the modern English. "Because God has said that you must not..... ?" The question points to the relevancy and personal trustworthiness of God. Does the knowledge that God has said something make it sufficient reason to believe and obey? That is the real challenge of human heart. Are we ready to believe what God has said? Do we trust that He would have our best in mind when He commands upon us an exclusive restriction that is not fully understandable? I invite you to have a look at the story of the fall of man from the initial pages of the Bible. Read the first three chapters of Genesis. Many of your ever-elusive philosophical and practical questions will find their answers.
Man was created in God's image for a totally personal and satisfying relationship with Him on the earth and thereafter in eternity in heaven. This love relationship was put to a test. Man failed, became a sinner by law and inheritance. He became doomed to major extent in living here and finally to death and hell. However, the love of God intervened. God entered the sinful man's garden. He gave the promise of a Saviour. God became man and took our sin upon Himself. Jesus died on the Cross because we could not save ourselves. He said before taking a last breath, "It is finished." He promised eternal life and forgiveness to anyone who would believe on Him.
This plan of salvation seems too easy from works mindset. But it is true. It is true, indeed, really, Yea; Because God has said so. Whoever you are, you just need to believe. Because He is a good God. If you have believed already and are facing life and the devil, there is an answer for you too. Believe God's promises. Believe those not because you feel like it. Most probably you don't. It is quite probable that the devil has made it seem like too ridiculous, unreasonable or unfair. Believe Him. He talks straight. Devil does not. He has an agenda. God does not. He operates from His goodness and love. He says to us in His Word, "All things are possible to those who believe."
Listen to Him. Trust Him. Because He has REALLY said it.
