"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes." (Psalm 19:7-8)
The Psalmists is celebrating the nature and impact of the Word of God. The usage of various words reveal how dynamic and specific is the nature of God's Word and so is our relationship with this Living Word. God has spoken for the sake of the mankind and it is the privilege of the believer of Christ to be transformed from glory to glory as he beholds the mirror of this awesome revelation of God. In this short devotional we will explore these ideas.
First comes 'the law,' which is torah in Hebrew. It can also be translated as teaching or doctrine. Some versions use the idea of revelation of God. Bible is the complete written revelation of God. 2 Timothy 3:16 pronounces complete Bible to be inspired by God. The Word of God is 'perfect'. This Hebrew word is also used for the sacrificial animals 'without blemish.' When we approach God's Word, first thing we recognise is that it is flawless, infallible and inerrant. Many times Bible may say things that seem contrary to our experiences and desires. In such scenario, we make a decision to trust the Bible instead of our own ideas. It converts the soul. This process is also called restoration, healing, refreshing, transforming and reviving. The idea is of bringing back into original design. When we believe the Word to be the ultimate standard, and when we tremble at His Word, our soul (the complete being) and our life is pulled back from the corruptions of sins. The word does the perfect work. All we do is - Believe!
The 'testimony of the Lord' is signified in the presence of the tablets of stone in the Old Testament tabernacle. A believer can learn to think with God in categories of life. Categorical doctrine is the term used for learning the full thought on what Bible speaks about certain subjects pertaining to life. Though reading maybe a relaxed, unorganised activity, but studying the Bible systematically in academic discipline requires work. "Study to yourself approved unto God..." It is the theologians who are able to be worshipers 'in spirit and truth' (John 4:24). We can get seriously committed to a life of continual meditation of the Word (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:2). We taste the sweetness of the Bible as we live by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God in as we chew it in our mental faculty. As we get built up in the practice of categorical meditation, we realise that Biblical doctrine is sure - reliable, trustworthy, clear, and absolutely true. Such a discipline takes us from open door-ed simple people to being a discerning wise man or woman of God. We are placed on the correct path in life. The corrupt software in us starts getting revamped. So do this O believer - Study and meditate!
Then, the Psalmists ventures into 'the statutes of the Lord'. Some versions use the term 'life-maps' or 'directions'. The Word of God also comes to us personally as a living and quick double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). In the Hebrew roots, this word carries the idea of visitation, care and appointment. God speaks to us specifically from His Word. In Greek New Testament, the word 'Rhema' is used to describe this personal, living word. These whispers of God are right - appropriate, straightforward, specific. This is where our deep questions are answered and life's directions are given. God leads us, comforts us and guides us. We learn to seek God's living voice. We remember what God speaks personally to us. I have known believers who keep a spiritual journal. Some believers have their Bibles marked every time God sends His personal Word. This brings joy to the heart. This satisfies our heart and shows the way of joy. It brings confidence and conviction. We trust that God has a personal Word for all situations of our lives, all we do is - Seek!
Finally, 'the commandment of the Lord' are 'pure'. The Hebrew root carries the idea of a charge or an order. God uses His word to correct us. The Word of God is the Holy Spirit's Sword. He relentlessly uses it on us. God is working on us to cleanse, mature and perfect us. His goal upon us is very high. He is conforming us into the image of His Son, Christ Himself. We are prone to darkness. We are quick to err and easily wrong. We need clear boundaries to show us that we can go astray. The Word of God puts us in a narrow path of liberty in Christ. We discover a new life of active obedience towards God. He directs our steps. We learn to seek His will in smallest details of life. He opens our eyes and enlightens our paths. He perfects who we are, how we live and what we do in our lives. He lends clarity, He affects our eyes, He makes us see clearly the things we could not naturally see. He shows us that obedience is not a burden, but an easy yoke. We just Obey!
O the perfect Word, O the perfecting Word! We celebrate the Word of God!
