I am not so much of an exercise freak. But I have a few friends who are. I have been told that an effective physical routine requires a person to stretch his muscles. However, today let us contemplate about the stretch that occurs in our soul. Of course, a normal human being does not prepare a calendar plan to exercise his soul. However, adversity provides us humans a gym where are souls are stretched. Often we don’t see it that way. At best we are prone to wish away and avoid the circumstances which seemingly resist our progress. I used the word seemingly with a purpose. Challenges and resistance are the incubators of character.
Ancient Hebrew poetry collection called Tehillim, author describes the idea of stretch associated with enlarging of borders. The authors mention the idea of letting their souls be strengthened as an edifice while they face their enemies. Could our current imbroglio of Covid 19 be such a melting pot? Many of us may be currently in or approaching unprecedented situations. How are we going to deal with it? Are we going to get depressed and negative? Are we going to succumb to the adversity? Or instead we will stretch and let our muscles of creativity and innovation be built stronger? Are we going to look forward to the future and dig deeper for better solutions for ourselves and the world around us?
What are those few things that we may do to let our soul be stretched, feel the pressure and yet not be torn? Here are a few starting points to start building on :
Contemplate on the needs of the future. Our world is transforming. We would never be the same. Map your skill sets with those needs. Aspire to provide solutions.
Reevaluate our value system. Find out how we need to change our priorities. Look at building better relationships. People matter, hygiene and health matters, spirituality matters too.
Develop a sense of timing about things. Time is an investment. Time is a piece of weapon. We should plan better, save appropriately and invest more.
Reach out beyond your usual space. We are not as limited by locations and functions as we thought. Previously defined stereotypes may be ready for encroachment. Multi-skill, multi-task and multi-produce. Uncreate, Create, and Procreate.
Finally, learn to take more responsibility beyond your small world. We make ourselves smaller by sticking to smaller units. In this respect loyalty may be a bad thing. Unknowingly we get attached to phrases like ‘my life’, ‘my job’, ‘my friends’, ‘my country’, and the list goes on. We may instead look at it as ‘my world.’ We may be able to change more than we think.
