"And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother." (Genesis 29:10)
In Genesis 28, we see Jacob's journey back to his Father's kindred in order to find a wife from an elect lineage. God met Jacob in this journey through a dream and renewed His promises to him. He also taught him the lesson regarding the house of God and the gate of heaven. There in a similar parallel in a New Testament believer's life. God meets sinful crooked people in the salvation by grace through faith and begins the work of transformation in their lives. He also brings them to the Church and gives them the good news of the gospel to preach. Jacob reaches the town of His mother's brother and finds himself near a well. Interestingly, the well is covered with a stone. There are thirsty sheep around, but the well is covered. This passage brings a tremendous principle regarding our usefulness in God's plan. When Jacob tells the shepherds to water the sheep, they express that they were waiting for someone to roll the stone from the well. It seems a helpless situation. A treasure covered by a stone and a few people who are not able to roll the stone. A lot of times, we are in such place or else people around are in that place. God's sheep is thirsty, the water is there, yet something is preventing growth and fruitfulness. This is perfectly how God's plans often work. 2 Corinthians 4:7 speaks about treasure which is hid inside an earthen vessel. John 4 Samaritan woman asks a similar question to Jesus, "You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.." (verse 11)
In Jacob's story Rachel came with her father's sheep and Jacob saw her and he went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth and watered the flock. Bringing the story home to New Testament church, when we discern the beauty of the bride of Christ, the Church, we roll the stone so that God's sheep is watered. God needs such ones who would be willing to roll stones of obstruction from people's lives. In Mark 16:1-3, the women who came to the tomb were concerned regarding who will roll the stone from the tomb. In John 11, when Jesus was about to raise up Lazarus from the dead (verses 38-41), he first said, "Take away the stone." And they took away the stone. We haven't been told were 'they'. We had 'them' in our lives. Those anonymous believers who look at the body of Christ and with their smallest gestures, roll away the stones of obstruction and cooperate with God in release of the blessing. I admire them. I have been helped often by them. 'Love is kind' - It makes it easy for people. Kindness makes everything easy. Kindness rolls away big looking stones. During ministry I have been in such places. Just a brief presence, just an encouraging story, a smile, a hug has a power to roll away the stone from a brother or sister's well and water the sheep. The question is, "will you see thirsty sheep as an opportunity to roll away the stone and reveal an empty tomb and the resurrected Christ?"
